Sheila Na Gig at St. Gobnait's Well
St. Gobnait's Holy Well is in the tiny village of Ballyvourney, Co. Cork. An ancient pagan protector, Sheila Na Gig, hovers above the fresh water spring. Often confused with a fertility icon, because of her gesture and generous proportions, Sheila Na Gig is actually a symbol of safety. Sheila Na Gigs are found on old Catholic Churches all over Ireland. Even though Christianity was taking hold, the old stone masons were still clinging to their pagan ways and would quickly chisel the protector, Sheila Na Gig, above an arched window.
